Quick Field Report – 4.5 oz Hammock Gear Cuben Fiber Diamond Asymmetrical Tarp

I just got my HG Cuben Fiber Diamond Asymmetrical Tarp and took it out for quick 4-day spin in the Alleghenies last weekend. Fortunately for testing purposes we had two nights of rain (about 0.5 to 1.0 inches total) with some periods of quite hard rain. This gave me a good chance to evaluate the protection of the tarp.

I slept quite dry both nights and my feedback is quite positive

This tarp pairs well with my Dream Hammock Darien UL (13.7 oz with all hanging hardware) for something approaching 18-19 oz for a complete hammock and tarp setup, including all hanging hardware and stakes and cordage for the tarp pitch.

    • Really like the stealth of getting a Cuben tarp in camo!
    • It is crazy light, about 4.5 oz
    • Requires minimal hardware and cordage (only two tie-outs & takes). Faster setup and less weight.
    • Although the A-sym shape looks like it might not completely protect the hammock, the greater area (about 20% larger than HH UL Asym) does a quite creditable job of keeping the hammock dry.
    • NB: while the hammock is well covered by the Asysm Tarp, there is less real-estate under the tarp to store your gear vs. a Hex Tarp. To stay dry much of your gear will end up directly below your hammock near the center of the tarp. That I guess is the tradeoff for lighter weight and a faster simpler pitch.

BTW the second pic is of my wife’s and my Dream Hammock Darien’s in ACU fabric.

Good looking tarp! Wish I had the balls and a masochistic wallet or I'd buy one myself. Just can't bring myself to spend that amount of cash :/

Actually for a Cuben tarp this is about as inexpensive as it gets. A good value!
MLD's version of this tarp is almost $200.
And hex Cuben tarps are in the $250 to $300 range. -a

Thanks for the report DCAD. I had just been thinking about trying an asym tarp but love my HG CF w/ doors too much to part with. ...but I have been thinking about the ease of 2 stakes and you're done.. now with the light weight of CF and this design I had to buy one myself. Wallet definitely lighter but I think this is just what I need for the longer summer bp trips.

I am curious, why do you pitch it with the widest part crossing the hammock?

Just purchased one of these for the other half. She has a 10' Darien as well

I could not resist picking up one of these. Mine weighs in at 3.5 oz in the stuff sack with no cordage or rigging. Unbelieveable!

Kbkjr1, you should pitch it with the HG label on the "left side" (as you are laying in your hammock). It is on the left side pullout. This assumes you have a standard one with the lay left to right (head on left and feet on right).

I have not had it out on an overnighter yet but planning on taking it on a trip on 10/4 on devil's path in the catskills. I got the plain green one, I like the transparency and being able to see out. I did take it out on an extended hike last weekend and at lunchtime, set my hammock and the tarp up. Coverage seems really good but I am going to set it up pretty close to my hammock ridge line for maximum protection. I will also bring an UCP just to be safe. It is so simple with two stakeouts and porch mode is doable as well.
