Smile Undecided First Time Tent Hammock Buyer...

    Greetings,

I came across the concept of hammock camping a few months back and the idea has really intrigued me. As you can tell from where I am posting my first thread, I'm leaning toward the purchase of a Clark Hammock. Specifically, I’m looking at the NX-250 model. That choice is based upon how you enter the hammock, my weight, the ability to store some gear under the hammock, and what appears to be a quality product based solely upon the written reviews of others. My only concern is the expense ($400+). Had the cost been in the $200 range, I would have bought one many weeks ago. I've looked at the Hennessy Hammocks and they seem to be well built and cost much less, but only one model is made to hold my weight. When I called them, they guy at Hennessy almost discouraged the sale of that particular model saying that it was "not one they like to sell." It was a very odd conversation to say the least.

I thought that if I provided you all with some basic information about me and how I'll be using my hammock, you could help me make an informed decision.

I am a little over 6 foot tall and I weigh in at 315 lbs. My campsites and hunting locations are usually less than 5 miles from where I park, so carrying weight is of no real concern. Most of my camping is done in the fall from early September to late November and again in the spring from early March to late May. In other words, I avoid the jungle hot season and the below zero temps that we see here in Missouri.

I see that many of you use many different hammocks, so I'm really hoping that your input will help me in my quest to purchase my first tent hammock.

    Thank you!

    Spratto'

The safari, I assume, was the model you were looking at. It is comfy for the big guys but I would agree that it is not the best option for shoulder season camping in that you would most likely have to purchase some underquilts for it in order to stay warm. The HH Super Shelter does not fit it. Pads can be used but the pad dance in a safari is a marathon dance number from my experience and most pads would not be wide enough for you in that hammock. The thing is HUGE. I am a dedicated HH user except for my home sleeper which is a DIY top loader so I can not comment on the clark except to note that many people are very happy with them. The same goes for the other brands. They all have their dedicated users and advocates. If you could get to a group hang you would be able to check out a lot of options at once. Always a good thing.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Clarks are exceptionally well built hammocks from what little time I've spent with them.

Beyond the obvious recommendation (see my signature line) I guess I'd have to ask if bugnetting is really all that critical given the time of year you plan on using the hammock? You can get something like a Trek Light or ENO that are both very well constructed and will support your weight. Plus, your initial investment is less than $100. You can save the rest of your money for cool stuff like tarps and underquilts.

    Welcome to the forum.

Do any of the Warbonnets come with bug netting. Unfortunately, "skeeters" are still a big problem in April/May and September.

I just checked out Warbonnet's website, but I wasn't able to find any information on a Trek Light or ENO, nor does he indicate how much weight the Warbonnet will support.

Netting is standard on the Blackbirds (Warbonnet).
After market bugnetting is available from a bunch of sources, so you can be bug free regardless of your hammock choice.

Trek Light and ENO are different companies.
You might want to check out the "Manufacturers" section; just click on the "Forums" link at the top of the page, then scroll down a bit. There are a bunch of em! Warbonnet has made at least one triple layer hammock for a 350+ pounder here on the forum and I've had a couple of 300+ folks in my Blackbird (double layer). No problems.

Ahh, gotcha. Thanks. I'm still very new to the hammock vernacular. I'll check out the ENO as well.

You'll find this page very valuable.
It's on the home page and the link is called "Hammock Acronyms".
