Where do you hang your rain gear for the night?

Where do you put your rain gear during the night while you are sleeping?

On my recent trip to Canada, I hung it over the ridge line but still under my tarp.

The problem that I had was that I hung it before I adjust my hammock and had a heck of a time getting the hammock adjusted correctly.

I don't have much gear left anymore when I'm sleeping. If I hang my food, my cookset goes with it. My hiking clothes are hanging somewhere drying and my misc this-and-that are hanging from a stuff sack on the ridgeline. If it's cold, my pack is under my legs. If not, it's usually clipped to the suspension or laying under the hammock.

But, when I've got extra stuff in the pack at night it usually gets clipped to the rings at the head-end of the hammock. If the weather is nasty, I'll wrap it up in my packa and set it under the hammock.

what cannibal said... but I'm having difficulty visioning how yur rain gear could create difficulty adjusting your hammock. I guess I need help with what that looked like.

Well being new to hammocking, (only the third night in a hammock) I set up the hammock and tarp without sitting in it. Before I sat in it to see how it laid, I hung my rain gear out toward the end of the hammock where the suspension lines attached. That night when I got in, I sagged to much, I assumed the weight of the gear on the ridge line caused me to tighten the suspension too much.

    rain gear?

I hike in Colorado - I never carry rain pants.

I hang my rain jacket over the end of the hammock that I think is most exposed. Attached with an office binderclip.

The rain gear used as a sock allows you to use a smaller tarp.

IMO that's doubtful. I would suspect you more likely needed to hang your suspension straps higher on the tree. Were you using the same trees you have used before? Assuming you weight >100# how much does your rain gear weigh? maybe a few ounces.. a pound at most? It is not likely that would make a significant difference in the tension on the straps.

Nope, I was traveling by motorcycle around Lake Superior and only stayed one night in each location. I could have had them too low. Sorry I didn't take a picture in this location.

Assuming you weight >100# how much does your rain gear weigh? The jacket was a north face mountain light and the pants where cheap blue plactic. But I'm not sure how much they weigh.maybe a few ounces.. a pound at most? It is not likely that would make a significant difference in the tension on the straps.
Here's the thread where I talk about my trip. http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ead.php?t=9533

I just don't wear my rain gear when it's raining. That way I don't have to hang it out to dry. Seriously though, I actually do that and not sure why.

If it is a short trip I will wear my rain gear. If it is a long hike then I will only use a pack cover because chances are you going to work up a sweat and get wet inside you rain gear anyways.

Ooooh, I like that. I probably wouldn't have thought of it.

That really deserves to go in the Tips and Tricks forum.

    Thanks food!
