    Ultralight explore questions

I have a few questions about my ultralite explorer, please.

    1. The tarp seems a little small for a blowing rain. Do you guys stay dry in hard and windy rain? I ask this because I am considering the hyperlite but that tarp is even smaller.

    2. Is the tree straps main purpose to protect the tree or does it also help handle the weight? Could you eliminate the straps and just wrap the hang rope?

    3. Does the shiny side of the tarp go up or down?

    thanks,
    Roy

    1. It's possible to stay dry in all sorts of weather with an asym tarp, but site selection is more important than for a standard luxury tarp. You may want to consider getting an UQ protector or a larger tarp if this is a concern.

    2. Please please please don't do that. It gives hangers a bad reputation, hurts trees, leaves marks, ect. Rope may also stretch. Just get a UCR and smaller tree straps if you're concerned about weight. Or tell us why you want to switch, and we will gladly suggest alternatives. (Also, most rope is actually heavier than straps. Check out Dutch for some ultralight equipment. And HH isn't even that light of a hammock. My suggestion: Upgrade your hammock and quilts first, and then the rest of your gear, and then you can come back and talk about hurting trees. Our answers won't change, but you'll have a much lighter bag by then anyhow. Don't do it. Seriously. The other stuff saves way more weight.).

    3. Don't know, sorry.

    1. The way you pitch your tarp will determine the protection you get. Practice. The stock tarp sheds weight and is made for the setup you have. I have used the HH asym in some CRAZY weather with no problems. I did shed weight elsewhere in my pack and got the hex for porch mode and above the tree line setups.

    2. What bush said

    3. I put the waterproof (shiny) layer down.

Definitely wont be wrapping trees with rope.
What lighter hammock/tarp combo would you recommend? My zpacks tent weighs 20oz, neoair pad 12ozs, and and montbell bag 32oz.
How can I get that light with all the equipment needed for a hammock?

I'm no math major but the published weight on the explorer UL is 34 oz. So you're replacing your tent/pad combo with a hammock (32 oz??). That looks like about a wash. Once you swap out the bag for a quilt/UQ combo it will be about dead even.

Staying light in a hammock is a piece of cake in warm weather. Fighting the cold just takes slightly more specialized gear.

How Tall are you & your weight? The HH Hyperlite and UL Backpacker are 28oz and 31oz respectively; The explorer is for larger folks and the explorer asym tarp is Larger than the ones that come with the ul backpacker & hyperlite. A HH Hyperlite paired with a Zpacks or HG cuben tarp would be a lighter option if you are <6ft and assuming you need full bug netting coverage.

This set up is under 64 oz (your current weight), but it's possible to get lighter. Consider getting an asym cuben tarp, a narrower hammock, using tulle for the bugnetting. ect... (Polycryo/Polycyro/polycro tarps come close to Cf weight without the cost or durability - they're a great way to test a setup)

    There's also this: https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...-hammock-setup

Combining those two, you should theoretically be able to get down to 47.5 oz.

And you should keep a look out for SGT Rock's posts. His stuff is pretty great.

The explorer should give you a little more wiggle room and comfort for you height. Shiny side down on the tarp. If you are happy with your tent setup why switch? It will be costly to lighten up your current hammock setup a whole lot. That said, comfort when sleeping is the primary concern. Make sure the hammock setup is going to work for you first...then you can begin to lighten things up.
