    Quilt baffles-ends sewn or not?

This sounds like a dumb question to me, but here goes-

When making a differential cut quilt, do the baffles need to be sewn at the ends (to the side walls essentially) ie. keeping the down sealed chamber to chamber? Or can they be left un-sewn? I had a couple baffles end up short until I figured out the amount of pull they needed to make it to the other end.

It probably doesn't matter that much. The down will tend to slide down when hanging rather than move laterally.

Another option is to sew through at the end, depending on how short you are.

You don't want your down to migrate out of the chamber. Sew it closed. It takes almost no extra effort.

I simply cut the baffles about 1" longer at each end. When I sew the ends, I just capture that extra inch.

I was afraid you'd say that. Haha! I used the modified quilt calc for dimensions, then I used your drawings for darts. I have trained my 10yr old daughter (who is keenly interested in anything to do with the thread injector) to say "darts are evil. darts are no fun." My quilt had a starting width of 46", and for darts I used 1"+\- per each of the nine chambers, losing roughly 9-10" at each end. I totally felt like I was guessing here, hopefully it's not too much. I figured from your drawing, your width was around 36" at the ends so I tried to stay in that ballpark.

My dimensions were pretty much guesses. It seemed to work, but wasn't quite as warm as I hoped (got me to around 30*F, lower and I was a bit uncomfortable). I'm not sure if that was due to baffle height, or the shape/gaps, or both. Or just me being cold natured. I've since switched from gathered end hammock to a bridge, and am deconstructing that quilt to convert it into a 40" x 50" rectangular 3/4 quilt I can use with the bridge. I foresee a downy mess in my future.

I'm also not sure I'd do a shaped quilt again. More much trouble than it's worth, IMO. but I'm also planning to stick with 3/4 quilts from now on, which don't really need to be shaped.

I sealed the ends the same way as MAD777 on my first quilt. On my 2nd I sewed down the short side to make a box. I like the second method much better.

I was about to throw the BS flag for the "almost no extra effort" comment, , but I got it figured out and it really wasn't that hard. I'm glad I sewed the ends, looks pretty good. As for the two shorter baffles, I just added a little extra netting, and everything worked out ok.
