    Warmth Question?

I have a ThermaRest Prolite from my ground days but have never used it in a hammock. I live in Texas, so the coldest it will get is around the 20's. Most of the time I will not be camping then, but for 40-50 degree weather how much warmth will my inflatable pad give me in conjunction with my Marmot Trestles 30 degree bag?

Just one way to find out: try it (in your backyard) and see how low you can go with that set-up. My guess is, the TaR would be good for 40°F, but everybody is different. I wouldn't be able to use a 30° sleeping bag in temperatures that low, but I sleep (very) cold. I used my TaR ProLite lightly inflated down to about 60°F and was fine, but didn't like the condensation I got. This, the cold shoulders and pad slippage got me to switch to an underquilt eventually.

Exactly what hutzelbein said. Only you can determine how low your gear can go and the best way/place to do that is in a controlled environment. Think back yard, campground with your car close by, some place where you can have perhaps your ground gear with you. You need a place you can retreat to in case it is too cold for your gear.

I think you'd be fine with that setup. The issue is staying on it. It takes some practice to stay on a 20" pad on a diagonal...

I'm probably the coldest sleeper on this forum! While in the army I carried and slept in an issue mummy bag in the summer! I have slept in a zipped up mummy bag with a night-time low of 79 degrees. In my home I sleep year round under an electric blanket set to mid heat range, a quilt, and a comforter. Apparently I am similar to a bear in that once I settle in and go to sleep my heart rate slows into the 30 beat per minute range. If I don't have lots of covers, I freeze.

I have a Big Agnes Lone Ranger 20 degree bag. I purchased this bag because the bottom of the bag has a sleeve for my sleeping pad, which limits it movement. Considering the fact that down is almost useless when compacted, could you slip your sleeping pad inside your sleeping bag. Just a quick thought I had while reading the thread.

Hey as long as you can stay on the pad at 40/50 you will be fine. You will know if any part of your body is off that pad when the cooler weather sets in.
    Straight out of Clayton.

Most physical hike: Grandfather Mountain, NC. Aug 13.

I don't need to make my pack lighter. I need to make my (_*_) lighter.
