    DIY Tarps/Hammocks

Just thought I'd show off a few of my DIY projects that I've been able to tackle in between studying for school and work.
11 ft hex tarp and matching double layer hammock using camo 1.1 and camo sil from ripstopbytheroll. I made this for my good friend who thru'd the Long Trail about a month ago. If my break from school was 3 weeks earlier, I would've accompanied him on that trip.

This setup I made for another friend who wanted a hammock setup for backpacking. It is a double layer 1.1 Robin egg Blue from Ripstopbytheroll, also with a matching tarp. The tarp reinforcement material is 300D diamond ripstop. My wife was jealous, so I had to make her a blue hammock as well. I made hers out of the 1.6 HyperD. That stuff is pretty sweet fabric, very silky feeling. I'm now jealous of her hammock.

I just finished this hammock tonight. It is a double layer made from 1.6 Argon, the inside is black and the outside camo. This fabric is awesome to sew, it is very soft, like cotton.

Just looking at the last hammock and I was wondering if you made and special cuts to the sides?

    Great looking hammocks!

Nice work on the diy....may I ask what setup do you have for your hammock stand? Is it the hinge style setup? And what is the length of the top rail combined?

    Thanks for sharing

No special cuts, but I use two tieouts about 8 inches apart to hold the hammock open and the net off the face.

I used the hinge setup with the cut tops to hold the spread. If I did it again I would have left the 2x2s full length instead of cutting them down to 6ft. The bar I believe is ~12 ft.

Does adding Gross Grain to the entire border of the tarp add a noticeable amount of weight to it? What width of gross grain is that?

If your an ultra lighter, then yes it adds some weight. Generally my tarps come out right around 16oz in the stuff sack with a 35ft ridgeline, tensioners and guy lines. I use 3/4 inch grosgrain. It can supposedly soak up water in the rain and add weight that way as well. YMMV. I think it looks professional and turns out better looking than my rolled hems on the cat curves.
