    Hard time breaking habits

Does anybody else have a hard time falling asleep on the trail or camping sometimes because of your habits at home? I sleep every night with a fan, an English bulldog who snores, and a highway near by. I have gotten so used to all the noise that when I backpack or camp it takes me a night or two to acclimate to the "silence" of the woods at night. Does anyone else have trouble falling asleep because of similar reasons? Once I fall asleep, I'm out, but sometimes it takes awhile. I love the sound of the woods, I just find it hard to fall asleep.

    Nope

Used to camp on a beach called Hulopoe longest stretch was 6 months so nice never wanted to go back up to the city

Used to have tourists hang out would chat with them a lot since I worked with em
sometimes they would tell me the same thing they miss the noises like traffic and other things that the island was so quiet kinda drove em nuts ?

So you are not alone but my comfort is silence and hate any city noise !

I don't miss the city noise....I'm just so darn used to it.
6 months on a beach... Sounds nice, except for the sand. I hate sand.

I live in a rather noisy environment and can fall asleep just fine, but oddly enough I find that anytime I'm away from my bed, I can fall asleep at a snap of a finger. Camping, in the car (not driving), laying on a rock on a trail somewhere. But when I lay in my bed, eyes open, mind racing.

It is more painful for me to get up when I'm away. I just don't want to...

Can you set your hammock kit up in the backyard and sleep there once a week just to get your body use to sleeping some place different.

I sleep on my deck 2 -3 nights a week.

My nickname is SAD, stands for "sleep anywhere Dave." Which is to say that I can fall asleep anywhere but I will admit that when I wake at night out in the woods it can be difficult to get back to sleep sometimes for the different kind of quiet. The thing is that even on a quiet night in the woods, it's not totally quiet, there are subtle sounds, they may not be significant to you but your brain is processing them none the less. I recommend trying some foam ear plugs.

I worked midnight shifts for years and because of the need for white noise to block out other sounds when I would sleep during the days, I got used to a fan on ...all year...all the time. So yes, I have issues sleeping without some sort of white noise in the background. It takes me way longer than a day or two to acclimate to no noise. In fact I was just out for 5 nights and not once did I sleep all night.

I am a very light sleeper so any noise in my home or the woods keeps me awake. My solution was buying those small foam plugs everyone uses for hearing protection and wearing them year round. They are always too long and fall out during the night, so i cut then in half and now they work great. It has improved my ability to get to sleep and stay asleep. They are cheap (and light for the gram weanies out there) and may work for you too. Good luck.

The cure for your issue is spending more nights outside. i was like you...to get to sleep in my own bed i had to have a fan plus an array of large pillows arranged in a certain way (helped alleviate some pain in my shoulder and neck). I rarely slept well when I traveled. In 2010 i was fortunate enough to do a through hike on the AT. 5-1/2 months of sleeping on the ground (didn't own a hammock then) with a wadded up down jacket as a pillow cured that. Now I sleep better indoors and out with just a single pillow and without the need of a fan, etc.
