Vibrational Transference - Wall to Hammock

    Hello,

I use a Mayan hammock indoors and live in an apartment. Many times my neighbours might be running an air conditioner, washing machine, or using a subwoofer, during which times, I am woken up or kept awake because the vibrations in the walls are travelling down my suspension into the hammock.

At the moment, I'm simply using eye-hook to which I tie the hammock ropes and then hammock. I tried placing a piece of rubbery carpet grip stuff between the eye-hook and the rope, but it doesn't do much.

Given the vibration, I'm absolutely sure the floor shares it, so using a stand will not help.

I can and have asked them not to use it in the night, but I need to take naps during the day too.

Does anyone have any suggestions how I can stop the transference?

If you lay on the floor do you feel the same vibrations?

Not sure what would work as a dampener. Maybe longer suspension if that would be possible.

    Yep, same vibrations.

And I've got the suspension full out as it is. It can be shortened, but not lengthened.

    Thanks for your consideration.

Do you think rubber tie down cords would work, or would they give too much?

I think rubber or bungee cord would stretch too much. But it may be worth a try.

The 'easy' answer is to move. Nothing that you can do will completely eliminate the vibration. Many people have similar issues in beds in shared apartment blocks. What you can do is try to tune and damp the system such that the most annoying frequencies are attenuated to the point where you can live with them.

Amsteel whoopies are awesome lightweight suspension for the woods, but they might not be ideal for you here. Something with some elasticity would help damp some of the vibration, and thicker suspension would change the frequency response too. Putting a damper on the lines could help. Google stockbridge dampers for the concept.

Webbing instead of cordage *might* help.

Whoopies will turn your hammock into a crude seismograph, btw. Eerie feeling.

At best I would try a small rubber inner tube from say Canadian Tire hooked on to the wall hook and then to your suspension with a strap, maybe even with a little air in the tube. The tube becomes the isolator between attachments and will have minimal stretch and will be cheap to buy.

No whoopies being used on my Mayan, that's my Freebird that uses that.

The ropes provided by the people who make the Mayan are 3/4" handmade cords (the pretty kind). This is what I'm using. I can only imagine whoopie doinging like a guitar chord.

If it helps I feel it most in the sides, so where my head and feet go.

The tire tube blown up sounds like an interesting idea, certainly not pretty. Ha ha!

try using your washer, subwoofer, air conditioner and so on when you know they are sleeping. perhaps the "do onto others" effect will take place and they will be more considerate to your situation.......

Since the source of this low frequency is coming from the wall. Disconnecting from the wall will eliminate the mechanical connection.
Basicly the wall has become the diaphragm of a microphone and the sound waves are being transfer mechanically to your hammock.

Using a stand will sever this connection from the wall but then you have the floor which may or may not be moving like the wall.
If it is using a sound dampening material under the stand should help.

This will not stop the low freq sound traveling threw the air which you will still hear.
