I messed up my BMBH. How to fix?

So, long story short, I was smoking in bed while on the trail, and the wind caught some ashes. The ashes went right through the BMBH like a hot knife through butter, and now I have two holes, one in each bottom layer, the size of a cigarette.

I wasn't hanging at the time, just set it up on the ground for bug net purposes, and I haven't dared hang since.

So...how do I fix the holes? Is it enough to just patch them up? I'm a little nervous about this, it would seem to cause a whole lot of stress on the fabric and the whole thing might rip if I hang. The holes are about mid section, right where you sit down to climb into the hammock.

Or do I make a long patch along the whole side of the layers?

Or do I change the entire two bottom layers?

    I'm such a clutz...

Supposed to be excellent stuff. I have never used it. But others have. One advantage is the holes have been sealed by the heat so they should not get worse by fraying.

Or contact the Jacks... I'm sure they would be willing to sell you a new one...
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

you can make your own no-sew patches using fabric and double sided sail-making tape, i'd use a round patch the size of a silver dollar or so

tsk, tsk, tsk, smoking is bad, very, very bad.
Burned thru holes have been addressed on the forum before, I don't recall the link. Some folks have done no repair and the fabric holds fine. The burn melted everything together and and essentially welded the hole, as the mathletes say the circle is the strongest thing around.
Patching presents its own + and -, creating lots of needle holes in bad location, visually distracting, etc.
Have you tried to lay in it? Does the hole look completly sealed around all edges?

Lots of people have used the hot knife to cut the fabric, and it holds fine. I guess its up to you on the fix. Or cross your fingers and try to hang on it, if it fails, you might want to give up smoking.

If you can find matching fabric, I would stitch a patch from side to side, just for the peace of mind on future trips.

Think of it as a weight saving benefit. You simply created "drainage" holes and can leave your tarp at home!
