Hanging out on the Little Satilla

I'm at our semi-annual clergy conference down in South Georgia, on the banks of a section of the Little Stills River known as Honey Creek. A couple of random shots.





Used my homemade NS last night. Ugh, not a good idea. You notice there's no bugnet. We'll there were no bugs, either, until about 1:00 this morning. Then they arrived in force. Switched over to the HH, but it's really humid today. May be another rough night if it doesn't cool off some.

So I switched to the HH. Monday afternoon a big front moved through. Dropped an inch and a half of rain in less than two hours. Rained pretty well again in the evening and then in the wee hours Tuesday morning. The MacCat Deluxe kept me all dry, though. Very happy with that tarp.



I did realize that at 6'2" the HH is too short for me to be comfortable. Look for it at a good price in the classifieds. I modified the suspension to accept whooped as shown here.

Thanks for posting the photos. It makes me realize that I REALLY like the looks of your tarp. Oh, my poor wallet!

The other thing I sat up and took notice of was the way you modded the suspension on your HH. I'm curious, so I'll pose a couple of questions:

It appears to be cut off short. How long is the original HH rope now?
Could you still use the stock tarp on the suspension as designed or is the suspension now too short? I can't tell if that's the original Prussik knot on there minus the clip or not, so I don't know if you still use the stock tarp on there.

To test the waters before cutting the stock suspension, would you recommend me to just tie a loop or a series of loops and attach to whoopies that way? (I realize there would be no weight savings doing so, but it would be reversible if I didn't like it or thought of something better).

It is quite short now, maybe 7" from the end of the hammock to the end of the bowline loop. That is the original prusik without the clip - good eye - but I left that there as a water break, not to attach the original tarp. I would think the ropes are now not nearly long enough, but I wasn't interested in using it that way any more, so that didn't figure into my decision to cut them. I suppose you could put the prusik out on the whoopie now, if you still wanted to rig it that way. It's such a small tarp, though, to get anything like the coverage I'd want, the tarp would have to sit right down on top of the ridgeline. That makes me claustrophobic. And hot.

My thinking, though, is that if I'm going to want a rain fly, I'll use the MacCat. It's light and offers much better coverage than the stock. With the rain we got the last two days, I'm almost certain I'd have gotten wet had I been using the HH tarp.

I tied the bowline and hung it up before I cut the ropes to make sure I had it like I wanted it.
