I just spent 4 days moving around a little west of the area, Grayling-Mio-Gladwin for some grouse hunting. Cold and damp...would have been more comfortable at 15°! But it's always a good time visiting Mr. Pine E. Woods

The Michigan BCUSA group did a fall get together over by the artillery range again . They got 6 squirrels a Porkupine and a Grouse which they cooked over the fire . I'm going to have to try and make the fall get together one of these years . One of the guys Logan Boon knows how to clean a porkupine so maybe he'll demonstrate that at the winter get together .
Nice! My cousin came along with his dog...just a pet, not for the grouse hunting. But while walking thru thru the woods, she did magange to find a porcupine and it was HUGE! Glad she didn't get too close, the nearest vet was at least 45 minutes away. Kicked up at least 6 birds, took several shots, but no kills. Still a lot of fun!
Back to the hang, pencil me in. I'm not sure I'll make it this time with a new baby at home. Still getting out, but just not as much.
A lot of interest in this at the Chilli hang.
I'm thinking heavily about going to this.....its the last weekend before school starts up again. Would be nice to end vacation with a trip. We shall see.....
My head is an animal
I still mentioned this trip to several people at the chili hang. I still have 5 quarts of chili in the freezer!
The Bushcraft guys are a good bunch. There is a nice overlap in the skill sets between the 2 forums. Most of the bushcraft guys have converted to hammocks. I've learned a lot from everyone and met some awesome people. I don't get out as often as I would like so these events are a bright spot for me. Combine it with some of the most beautiful country and it just gets better. Is it time yet??? Vulture...bring the chilli. If your willing to haul it in we will eat it. Methane is a natural heating source.
Although this is not much of a hike this year , it still is a good test IMHO . You must organize your gear so that you carry everything you need , its just far enough from the parking lot that it would be a PITA to go back for more gear . If you want a true test you can park at the east parking lot and hike 6 to 8 miles . Keep in mind there are no snowmobiles allowed in this area so most likely you will have to break trail with snow shoes if you elect to do the long hike . Do the short hike and at least the trail will be broken for you ( unless you're the first guy )
It sure seemed like more than 1 mile! But I just checked on Google maps and that seems about right. I had a good time breaking the trail at 11:00PM last year! 7° when I arrived and I think it only warmed up from there. Strange weather that's for sure. I heard Vince come in some time during the night, 3am or so? LOL crazy fun!
I almost lost the trail coming in from the east side a couple years ago in the fall...couldn't imagine it in 2' of snow!!
