    Underquilt for 11' hammock question

Just set up my new Dutch 11' hammock, with my underground 3/4 zeppelin and the quilt seems tight. It picked up the hammock, and when I lay in the hammock, the quilt still comes up high on the sides
The shock cord seems too short.
The quilt has only been used a few times.
Will it stretch, or do I need to add some lengthen the shock cord suspension?
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Koh

By the way, love my new hammock Dutch!

Yeah, I just tried to hang a zeppelin with a 12' hammock, not happening. Just need to add a little loop of something to the end and all good.

Underquilts are designed for humans, not hammocks. Yes, UQs will pick up the hammock, and they will come up the sides. However, once you lay in the hammock the UQ should be snug up against the bottom, eliminating air gaps.

If it's coming high up both sides, sounds like you're sleeping like a banana, rather than on the diagonal. Shug has a vid where he places his feet kind of through the shock cord so the UQ doesn't move on the foot end. Then all you have to do is get it situated on the opposite shoulder and sleep like a king.

I can see how a 12 ft. hammock might need a longer suspension. However, I'd be surprised if it was an issue with an 11 ft. hammock, which are pretty common. You think UGQ is actually designing their hammock suspension for 10 ft. hammocks or shorter?

What I can say is I tried a Zeppelin, but I do not know if the suspension had been modified by the original owner. I'm guessing not. The hammock is 145" whip to whip with a 119" ridgeline and there was no way the primary suspension was connecting to the hammock suspension. Based on that, I would hazard to say yes, 10ft hammocks.

Short term I will attach the quilt to my gear loops inside the hammock or add an extension to one end. Longer term, I will replace the primary suspension with a longer length of shock cord.

Depends on if it was bought new, or if the suspension was altered prior to owning the 11'-er.

I bought my 20˚ phoenix used here on the forum, and it worked just fine on my WBBB. First time I tried to use it on my DH 11', it was WAY too tight. So either the person who owned it before me shortened it from stock, or HG just didn't use as long a piece on that quilt from the get go. Either way, I've had a soft shackle pretty much permanently attached to both ends of my hammock for a while now so I can use it. Should just swap out the shock cord and use a piece a few feet longer, but I'm lazy … plus it guarantees that I always have at least a couple soft shackles in case I need them in a pinch.

EDIT: Ratdog said something similar, also about a quilt purchased used. Go figure.

Well, duh, kinda forgot that people buy used gear that could have been modified. Wonder if the OP bought his UGQ used.

I've altered the length of the shock cord suspension on most of my HG quilts over the years … but I always do it using knots or some sort of hardware, so that it's reversible. That way if I ever planned to sell them, they'd be able to be returned to OEM specs.

I had this problem with my yeti when getting a XLC instead of my regular BB. The shock cord was like a guitar string, and pressed on my temple when lying in th ehammock. The solution, highlighted to me by someone on here (forget who - it's an old post of mine) was to extend the shock cord by about as much as the hammock is longer. I used dogbones, but anything that makes the suspension a bit longer will (should) do.
