    tarp selection ? ? ?

Thank you all for informative and enjoyable reading.
Have spent many good hours on this forum.

Have begun to suspect we are beginning a long path of gear collecting.

Considering future hammock camping; presently intrigued by the vast possibilities.
Expect that our senior years of car trip-camping will be enhanced
by hammock camping. Particularly in 'remote walk-in sites'.

    Currently :
We are tent campers using a hammock for the pleasures of afternoon naps or reading
or hanging out enjoying the landscape or stars.

Recently got a ENO DoubleNest ( very recently got another SingleNest for when
we both want to nap; and a bugnet not yet used).

    The Tarp :
Hanging out in the rain is our current need for a tarp
( we camp in the Catskill Mts (NY) one expects rain ).

Originally, when first doing research here on the forum, thought there would be one tarp
for now and could serve the future hammock camping for one of us.

Now know that is not necessarily the way to think of it.
Heavy rain, wind and cold will require proper coverage.
Already have learned much about the options ( perhaps a MacCat or other similar ).

Currently : a tarp to shelter in the rain yet allow viewing the landscape.

Have considered ENO's flys but see less costly selections and some negative comments on the forum.

Have seen images of the Kelty Noah series ( can be picked up in a store ).
Will 9' be big enough or the 12' too large a setup to simply cover one hammock?
Or should we jump in and make a larger investment and not regret it over time.
( Don't expect we will be doing deep winter camping, at least not both of us. Yet, I am intrigued. )

Have delayed a choice too long, therefore asking for opinions and advise.

First of all, welcome to the forum.

The Noah 9 has a 13' ridge length I believe. Plenty for most hammocks, readily available, and the price is good for what you get. The tarps from Brian at OES are some of the best on the market, and he is a member here.

OES 10 x12 should be enough for coverage. http://www.outdoorequipmentsupplier.com/
    Warbonnet makes a nice tarphttp://www.warbonnetoutdoors.net/tarps.htm
These two folks are great to deal with from what I hear. Custom tarp sizes available.

I've heard rave reviews about these folks as well. http://www.cookecustomsewing.com/sheltertarp.htm

Kelty and ENO have a reputation of being heavier than comparable tarps, if weight is not an issue, then these would be good choices as well.

I have seen one ENO tarp and can't for the life of me figure out why someone would pay money for it. It was small, did not stretch tight (although maybe that was the hanger using it) and heavy as all get out. I hear great things about ENO's hammocks, but the suspension system and tarps have all been passed on by a lot of folks from the forums. Speer, OES, Warbonnet, JRB and Kelty Noah are very popular around here. If price is the major consideration then the Noah 9 would seem to be a good deal. I doubt you would "regret" it. But at the same time if you want superior quality you might look at the other vendors mentioned.

A word of note... If you get into this very much at all you will eventually _need_ (want) more than one tarp. The Kelty would not be the best choice for deep winter/cold weather hanging. But for a ligther weight set up it would be fine. I would not try to use the Noah 12 unless you go square hang. Diagonal (corner hang) you are talking about almost 17' of ridge. You could host a family reunion under that thing but it will severly limit your site selection. On the other hand a 12' tarp is plenty long for most purposes if you are properly centered under it.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

I love my Speer Winter Tarp for year round coverage. Not for a Bridge though.
Predictions are risky, especially when it comes to the future.

    Thanks for the information.
A Kelty Noah9 with a 13' ridgeline sounds good for a summer rain.

We have begun to smile when talking of hanging in the snow.
We tented in the snow once.
Looks like so much fun in all the images and videos on the forum.

Expect there is a OES MacCat and also a tarp with doors in our future.
Solving the current needs with the Noah9, now and we can see how that works.
That will give us time to check out the other winter options.
( Of course that sets us on the path of gear collecting. )

You can also get custom stuff done by OES. I got an OES 10x12 done in a similar style to the speer winter tarp, with a few extra tieouts added to really allow some complicated pitching options. It's large enough for two-hammock hangs in fair weather, and plenty big to really button up tight over a single hammock when it cools down.

You cannot go wrong with a tarp from OES; just can't go wrong!

I love my Speer Winter Tarp for year round coverage.

Have gone back to speerhammocks and studied the forms and setups of
the WinterTarp and see the possibilities as a good tarp for us.
