    Sleeping bag conversion to tq

I've been mulling it over and I may convert my son's sleeping bag to a tq, remove the zipper and hood and close up the footbox. This is his primary bag for scouts and aside from one or two destinations, will be hanging most of the time.

Can anyone think of reasons why I shouldn't?

    Thanks.

Edit: it's an older EMS synthetic mummy I got second hand cheap.

Sounds like the perfect candidate for some DIY modification. It can still be used with a ground pad if he needs to go to ground. Just add some loops or tabs along the sides to tuck under /attach to ground pad to keep it in place.

His ground pad is a classic green z-rest. How would I mod that? I can imagine 1/4" grosgrain looped around one of the folds with velcro loops on the ends, to hook onto the tq... yes? I want to avoid as much hook from velcro on the tq as possible to avoid abrasion on the hammock fabric.. or a cover for the z-rest?

For what it's worth, I just use my sleeping bag, unzipped, as a quilt. Haven't experience any problems with this method yet and the bag is still 100% functional as a mummy bag.

+1 on just opening the bag. That's what I have done.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Yeah, I agree with rev and zooshooter. The zippers and hood are unnoticed when I use it as a quilt, nor have they caused any issues in any of my hammocks. The best argument for a formal conversion is to shave a few ounces of weight, I suppose.

I, too, occasionally use an opened sleeping bag, but I have noticed a couple places on my hammock where I suspect the zipper has rubbed the 1.1 ripstop a bit thin. You do need to be careful when moving around that you don't poke the hammock fabric with the zipper.

I did. He likes it. Lol. Then I made a hiking skirt, and cleaned a vintage Singer....

I won't do it to my sleeping bag though, it's still like new. I threaded some shock cord and a mini cord lock around the zipper about where my knees are. I can tighten the lock and it keeps the zipper from opening up on me. I also put some loop velcro on a piece of soft terry cloth rag to cover up the hook where the hood attatches so it isn't scratchy. Little things...
