    NJ>Batona Camp>10/4/14>Training Hike

I'm probably gonna hike Ong's Hat to Batona this weekend. I've got site 12 at Batona reserved if anybody wants to hang in the piney woods.

    Bring pallets!

On the old map, Ong's Hat to Batona is 18.7 miles, but I think with this Franklin Preserve addition it's probably closer to 20 or 21 miles. Oxygen tanks are recommended for the arduous ascent up Apple Pie Mountain, but I'm just gonna wing it!

20 miles in one day? I hiked a little bit of the Franklin Parker section last week, watch the poison ivy.

The only reason I mention the poison ivy, as you are obviously well aware of it being out there, is that just across 70 the trail is 'manicured' as in cut with a mower. It hasn't had enough use yet to be cut into the forest so they maintain it and I walked through with low boots on and got a bunch of my ankles and lower leg. If it's been freshly cut, no big deal.

You know ya gotta climb the tower, right? Tap the lock on the trap door and check the views of AC. It feels rickety but it holds me.

Yeah, I've been up the tower before. Trees as far as the eye can see, and a beautiful view of the closed casinos in AC!

Luckily, it appears I'm no longer allergic to poison ivy. One of the strange parts of getting old. My poison ivy allergy has disappeared, but now I have new allergies to pollen or who knows what. Sometimes my eyes really itch.

I am aiming for 20 miles in one day. I've done 16 miles in a day, so just trying to up it in preparation for doing the entire Batona in two nights, three days.

Problems with the truck, otherwise I would have been able to meet you out there. But enjoy!

I think I'll pick up my camping permit at Batsto in the morning, drive to Batona and leave my car there, then slackpack around for the day. Looks like rain gear is in order in the AM!

If he's out hiking, then steal something, just to let him know you were there.

That picture is awesome because if you pan up, it shows how that whole tower is held together.

On the other hand, almost the entire horizon is lined up with the horizontal window pane divider, so you can't see me standing on a craps table, dancing and singing in AC.
