Why isn't seam sealing of sil-nylon tarps done a the factory.

I've been looking at a new tarp and would really like to go for a lighter than my previous DD tarp. I would really like to get a cuben fiber tarp but they are a bit pricey. The other option I know of is sil nylon but that needs to be seam sealed from what I've read. Ok, maybe that's not really a problem, but why isn't the tarps in sil-nylon seam sealed at the factory?

Oh, other material options for a low weight tarp would be nice too

Some cottage vendors do seam seal, but factory built tarps don't do it simply as a function of cost.
    Good luck,

Jared, from Simply Light Designs will do it. His Winter Haven tarp is awesome and very comparable to my Warbonnet Superfly and my Wilderness Logics Old Man Winter. I like his options and pull outs better, too.

Just about all of us cottage shops that participate here on the forums offer seam sealing as a service. Shop around and find the tarp size and shape that fits your needs.

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll have to look around some more.

I think Underground Quilts do theirs as well but I'm not positive, they do make a fine tarp though.

The only vendor I am aware of that does not offer sealing is warbonnet and that is only for the pullouts.
Pullout are optional on most tarps so you don't have to order them.
Sylnylon is a great choice and my preferred material.

The ones I looked at and got this seemingly wrong idea were Zpacks, mountain laurel designs and hyperlite mountain gear + one or two more.
