If you are just talking about whipping the ends, I would think you could use either. The amsteel is obviously going to be lighter and the 550 is going to be cheaper. As a general rule, I'd stay away from 550 when it comes to the hammocks suspension. It's way too stretchy. It also weighs more when wet as the amsteel barely holds water at all.

I second ripstopbytherolltheroll.com. They are good people over.

And again welcome to the addiction. I finacially cant do anything right now but i dont consider buying anymore. I think "how can i make that". My project list consist of two tarps, winter and hex, two new hammocks and a backpack. Just to start the list. So yeah it's an addiction. Have fun!!!

Oh you asked about winter tarp patterns. Google winter tarp pattern, or diy winter tarp. Thats where i found my winter and hex tarp patterns. In the images section of your search.

For whipped ends, think small diameter. Amsteel is too expensive for this application and 550, well, just stay away from it completely for hammocks and tarps. Use it for other craft items.

A simple cord like braided mason's line is very inexpensive and thin. Other small diameter and inexpensive cords should also be considered before going the Amsteel or Zing-it, etc. route.

Whipping is only used to gather the ends together. There is no other structural need. It can even be as simple as a zip tie. After you gather and whip the ends, your suspension attachment will be next to the whipping, inside towards the hammock body. This is the structural component that needs the Amsteel/Dynaglide cordage.

For the whipping on my hammock, i just used basic rope (from walmart but anywhere will have it). Florida hanger is right about the whipping. I was able to use the same rope i used for my whipping (it was strong-ish rope), made a loop, put it below the whipping toward the hammock side, pulled it through its self so it cinched down under weight, at that point the loop is pulling on the hammock and the whipping is just there as a stop knot, and attached my biner and my whoopies to the biner. The whoopie slides better over a biner. The fixed end of the whoopie goes over my toggles.

Correct me if im wrong about the whipping and suspension.

Hope that wasn't confusing. But thats the system i like and use.

Well, I know someone who uses Cinch buckles attached straight to his Hammock and Dutch clips on the straps to wrap them on the tree. I am thinking of going that route myself.

Suspension using all straps are fine, also. Many folks use them for a long time now.

You can use anything for the whipping including the straps themselves, if that's what your describing. Just remember, when it comes time to wash the hammock, you'll need to remove the straps, then regather the hammock before adding the straps again.

I have a small channel at the ends and use a short length of braided mason's line. I pass the line thru the channel and pull the fabric in, then tie it off. The gather is automatic and makes a ball at the end that I hang my UQ on. Shug has a video useing this method. He gives it a wrap or 2 if needed, around the ball.

Question on Seam Sealer. Wally World here carries Coleman Seam sealing liquid. Is there any difference in the quality of the different products like the Coleman and the Sil-net?

If you're using silnylon, you need silicone sealer. The stuff by coleman is for pu coated stuff I think.

There is a recipe for silicone caulk and mineral spirits for diy silnet

Yeah, I was given it before, enough to seal an entire tarp. I'll double check the Coleman stuff at Wally World though.
