I use one of these with a fleece watch cap underneath to retain all of my head heat. This will also catch your breath condensation as well

I bought mine from Amazon. Just do a search for "6-in-1 Fleece Hood"

When it gets below zero i use a half face neoprene mask, otherwise im just fine with a wool balaclava .
For cold weather I also use a balaclava with a buff on top of that around my neck. Adjust both as needed, but I never cover the nose. The microclimate near your face when laying more or less cocooned in a hammock should mean that you´d get a bit higher temp compared to standing up in the "free" air. I also tend to keep the bug net closed which also helps a bit with reducing wind circulation. Have never had problems with condensation, but I guess that depends on location/climate/humidity etc. Do you experience that throat discomfort also when out of the hammock?
Those fleece hoods are the bomb-diggity. Forgot I had one stashed away!!! Thanks.
I take a military poncho liner and create a loose tunnel over and around my head to breath thru. I have tried sleeping in beanies etc but they either come off or get twisted over my face which I find very annoying.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !
I too suffer from the cold nose syndrome. I have a system of items to use depending on the temps. They include a balaclava, a simple beanie and a down beanie. If mildly cold, just the simple beanie. If getting into the forties, I may use the down beanie. The Down beanie is actually over sized so I can wear it with any of the other components in this system. With it being over sized I simply pull it down enough to cover the tip of my nose and I'm really good there. If I'm hanging in temps at or below freezing, the balaclava comes into play pulled up to under my lower lip and the down beanie down to my nose and I am in bliss.
Probably sounds more complicated than it really is but an effective yet light weight configuration none the less. I don't use a head cover often when hiking because I tend to overheat that way. Just need something to keep my ears from getting cold in that arena.
