My second hammock was a HH ultralight I bought from a hammock forum member for $130. I later purchased a separate tarp - which I asked for suggestions from others here. You can always get a Peak storage bag for the head end as well as a ridge line pouch - streamline here makes some very nice ones.
So I would start with your best basic hammock you feel is best ( with big net etc) and go from there. He will be very jazzed with a very nice solid piece for starters

I have 3 of the HH Expeds fpr my 2 daughters and my wife. A good friend of mine also had a Exped but he was right at 6' and decided to upgrade to the WBBB. I think you BF would do fine with the Expedition model but would strongly encourage the zipper model over the bottom entry. Makes it easier to access things that are outside the hammock versus having to get out of the hammock all together. The bottom entry is a clever idea making it easier to get in the hammock for some folks but having the zippered bug net is worth the price even if you have to have it modified. Also recommend a larger tarp but that is something he can get later on his own. The stock tarp really only covers the hammock. In a rain storm, he'll be hard pressed to cook under it.
Good luck.

If you get your BF any Hennessy, he'll be jazzed. They are good. Some people here prefer zippers various places, but the stock Hennessy is a Very Good Hammock. I have camped using an old-school Expedition 2.5 and loved it.
You may want to consider this hammock which is right in your price range and is a very nice starter hammock. It would be the equivalent of buying a Ford or Chevy in the auto world....a good value for your money.

They are $150 for the hammock and tarp or $120 for the hammock alone.

wrap up a wal-mart tent and let him open it. this must be on video.
(you only need an empty tent box LOL)

I'm 5'9 165lb. I got a HH exped for a starter hammock and it haz done me well. Fit is just fine and the tarp is nice for summer but will need to be upgraded for 3 season. So i think you would be safe to save the cash and go with a HH exped. Also you might post a WTB (want to buy) thread and see what pops up. odds are you'll find something better and cheaper than retail.
