    Prusik knot strength

    hello everyone,
So I'm brand new to hammocking so new I don't even have a hammock yet! I do however have a brand-new warbonnet Superfly, hammock will be coming early next year in time for some Fairweather hammocking.

My question is regarding my Superfly, I set it up as a continuous Ridgeline using lash it 1.75 and my prusik loops are also made out of lash it 1.75. Setting it up at the park everything works fine the prusik knots held well, so the question is do you think they will hold well under bad conditions?

It was a very difficult decision on whether to go with the continuous Ridgeline or the split Ridgeline ultimately I went with continuous because I plan on running the pole mod and I didn't want the poles to rest on the tarp itself. If you have some thoughts on that it would be great to hear as well.

    Thanks guys!

Prussik strength depends on how many loops you add

My experience has been that using the same size cordage for both lends better results.

7/64th as a continuous loop on some 1.75 began slipping, after some wear, under heavy forces.

I replaced that 7/64th loop with a 1.75 loop and the slipping stopped. Five wrap prussik in both cases.

Serious winds had no effect on the prussik once it was set.

A couple things I have found.

    1) More wraps = more bite
    2) Smaller cordage (1.75mm) wrapped around bigger cordage (2.2mm) = more bite (but the same size line to the same size line is fine too)
    3) Wear on the line (as happens naturally as its used) helps. Once you get the slick coating off the line = more bite

I love prusiks and used them exclusivly for years on my RL's. I recently switched to the Tato Tarp Connectors and they are awesome. Highly recommend them as a prusik alternative.

When I read this a light bulb exploded above my head. Had never occurred to me. Thanks for the tip, Burg54

Here’s a video that shows a setup using a 2.2 mm CRL and 1.75 mm Prusiks. Might be a setup you could use. Fast forward to 18:49.

Thank you all for the feedback!
Doesn't sound like I'm too far off the mark. I bought a 180 ft of lash it 1.75 so I'm kind of committed to that unless something goes wrong then I will look into the thicker Ridgeline smaller prusik knot option.

Purely out of curiosity if prusik knots work why did you go with the bigger heavier option?

The Tato Tarp Connectors look pretty slick... will have to give them a try. Thanks!

I'll second the tato tarp connectors. Just so easy to use. I do use prusik knots in other applications but Tato is be far my favorite tarp connector.
