Am planning on hanging in the cross-florida greenway trail at the weekend; anybody have any issues there?
Good deal can't wait and a great reminder that these parks belong to all of us!!
Spent the last few days on the cross-florida greenway. Yawning silence in response to my post, above, but there was no problem and as always the hammock gets lots of interest from people who came by the camp. Hope this becomes normal and accepted in florida!
rtroost I think there is some sort of form to fill out for the state parks guys- a survey of some sort. (have a look through the thread)
my hammock gear weights total: 2430g (~86oz)
Winter: total 2521 (~89oz)
(see my profile for detailed weights)
gram counter, not gram weenie!
Yep, I answered the survey. I hope others do too as its important they feel the consultation period got used!
I tried to set up my ENO at one of the camps on the Suwannee Wilderness Trail here in Florida this past weekend. The camp host told me it was not allowed. When I quoted (not verbatim) this posting, he called his manager who told him that no hammocks could be tied to native vegetation, even if we were using bark-safe straps. They do have hammock hooks inside the screen rooms (pic attached), which is nice, but they don't allow dogs in there. So I can camp in the screen rooms and leave my dog at home, OR take my dog and sleep in a tent in one of their BEAUTIFUL riverside backpack sites (pic attached).
I'd rather be able to take my dog and hammock and sleep on the limestone bluffs above the river. I'll contact the guy listed above and post later what the response is. For those of you who kayak and hang, the Suwannee is a trip you cannot miss and these river camps are awesome.
Let me stress again that we need to be contacting the state PRIOR to any trips so they can prepare the way. I've contacted Mr. Madden to see if he can shed any light on what happened here.

Maybe we should ask the mods to update the title of the thread so that folks don't just read the title (and nothing else) and go telling folks they can hang (with out the necessary prior consent from Mr. Madden and the park officials) in the state parks - of course, after 18 pages worth of conversation you'd hope folks would have at least paid attn to the details...
I guess there are some things you just can't fix...
We all know of the original "Walk off the war" thru-hike - but, check out these guys, they're helping folks 'walk off the war' today -

Mr. Madden got in touch with me this morning. He's going to get in touch with the supervisory district to investigate. I'll let you know when I hear back.
