I'm actually doing my first solo hike/campout tonight and I use a similar setup:
- rope around tree (as a tree strap)
- biner on the strap
- whoopie sling to biner (and tarp guy lines to biner)
- other end of whoopie sling attaches to aluminum descending ring secured to hammock with small loop (double fisherman's knot)
I'll take some pics/vids and post them tomorrow to demonstrate. I think it's similar to what Shug is describing.

Shug.. That is a configuration I offered early on... Having a ring built into the fixed eye. It didnt sell real well so I ended up dropping it.
I think using the tail of the sling as a drip loop would also work.
