All ripstop. What I left behind was the several bolts of waterproof white non-ripstop nylon. They also had a couple of bolts of non coated ripstop nylon.

We learn by emulating others.
Today I went back to the "bad Walmart" and bought ALL the ripstop they had.
Not quite commercial quantities, but I got 5 yards of brown DWR and 5 1/2 more of the grew nysil DWR.
Bring on armeggedon, we'll be ready!!

Silnylon will look frayed on the very edges b/c there's a small strip where the treatment ends. Probably 1/8" or so. Run your fingernail along it and try to fray it some more. Sil will give you nothing (at least when new), while DWR or untreated will start fraying.

IMPOSSIBLE JUST TAKES LONGER
After all the talk about the $1 a yard fabric I gave in today and went in search for some. On the 3rd Wal-Mart I found a buch of it. I got 15 yds of non coated and 24 yds of coated. Will make for some fun test hammocks.

Wal-Marts in the Mount Rogers area. Maybe some of you can get to their fabric departments before Jeff cleans them out. Let the race begin.
This is one of those times where living where no one else does has an advantage, no one to fight over fabric with. he he
hey seuss... are you goingto be able to join us for the mt rogers camp out?
and did you go to springer this year?
I too will something make and joy in it's making
I found and bought 15 yards of the gray sil-nylon at my local Walmart (Camden, SC) this past weekend at $1 per yard. It passed the water glass test referenced earlier in the thread. I am not sure yet what I am going to use it for, but I could not pass it up. The department manager was excited to get rid of it. She said that she was tired of picking it up. Being slippery apparently it kept falling out of the rack! Apparently they have had it for several weeks or months.

Trippclark,
Beware, I bought some grey and thought it was nysil, but those smarter than I say it is DWR.
Apparently, if you can blow through it AT ALL, it is DWR. I went back and tested it again and I could BARELY sense any flow through the cloth.
It sure looks pretty close to waterproof to me, though.
