Welcome fellow Coloradian!
A structural ridgeline's main function is to ensure a constant and consistent sag. Since the two ends of the hammock can only be as far apart as the length of the ridgeline, your hang will be near identical every time. It is a convenience in most cases, little more.
Trust nobody!
A ridge line helps you to get the rough pitch of the hammock the same every time. Setting the amount of sag---or droop--in the hammock body consistent from one set up to the next. Some like very little sag and some like a lot and what you like may vary from one hammock to another.
