WV the real question is has anyone not done the mod in both ends. When I do try it I plan on only doing the mod on the foot end only but from what recall pretty much everyone has done both ends.

Oldgringo, a question about your application of Newhanger's idea. Does the bar try to ride up the triangle of Amsteel? I don't see anything to stop it from doing so.

No, it's in stasis...it stays put, at least for short hangs. I'm going to put a net on it tonight, and overnight in it, just to make sure. If it should, shortening the Amsteel, so that the bridle forms an equilateral triangle should settle it's hash.
What I think will creep are the loops on the ends of the bars, if no shoulder is present to stop them, hence the pvc couplings.
I bought some more fittings and pipe today, and will be testing a few ideas and different hammocks in the next few days. One, the Claytor MH really has my curiosity piqued.

Thanks. I stopped at Home Depot on my way home today and picked up a dowel.....
This isn't the first project that Red has gotten me into!

While I haven't been able to hang in mine for long enough to fully feel it out,(hence no pictures...) I can tell you that the loops will bite into the lead under pressure, kind of locking both lines together. So you will lose a little distance on your spreader bar but it makes a strong connection. I'm still concerned about loading and unloading on the support over time.
I'm flattered you like my idea Oldgringo

Mike, I slept in the GTUL overnight, and the bars stayed put.
I got a surprise, though, even though I should have known...a bug net built for 11' hammocks just barely fit. Now, I can shorten my triangles up a bit, but while you may be able to shave some weight by shortening the hammock, expect bug nets and socks to be a tad heavier.

Well, I only made one hammock this weekend with the mini-spreader bar. Wow! Was it comfortable!
BUT.....
I cut the hammock radically different than my other hammocks. I know, I know. I'm only supposed to change ONE thing at a time. So now I'm making the mini-spreader bar mod to two identical hammocks, but it will be next weekend before I can test.
