So one set of carbon tubes is 9.75" long and I drilled for a 9" gap. Do you guys think this is to far?

My initial thought is no, that shouldn't be too long. Ya won't know til' ya try.
I wonder if the longer they get the more they'll want to turn away from horizontal? Just like a full size spreader bar hammock tend to want to dump you out.
Let the experiment continue.
Good luck,

I made a new living room hammock a few weeks ago with a crinkle taffeta tablecloth (60 x 126) and mini spreader bars a la Redoleary. I used wooden dowels about 1/2" in diameter. I put cotter pins in the holes to keep the suspension lines from sliding down to the middle of the spreader bars. I clove hitched the suspension lines around the spreader bars outside of the cotter pins. Here are my thoughts:
The Redoleary spreader bars virtually eliminate any calf ridge and make a very comfortable hammock.
There are a couple of forces at work here:
1) The spreader bar allows the channel to arc gracefully below the spreader bar. This is the equivalent to pulling in the corners in a whipped end. If you run the spreader bar through the channel, you will be losing this advantage.
2) I think the Redoleary spreader bars make the hammock perform "longer" than it actually is. They create a "virtual length" that is longer than the fabric length = MORE COMFORTABLE!
Finally, a question: Has anyone figured out how to prevent the ends of the hammock from sliding down below the spreader bars? In other words, over time, they gather up tighter below the spreader bars, and you lose some of the two advantages above. Any solution?
Thanks everyone---especially Redoleary---for the inspiration!

You're welcome Pips! I glad to hear it's working for you.
I would imagine you could had sew the corners of the hammock to the amsteel just under the spreader bar. That would keep them from creeping towards the middle.I was gonna try that on my other hammock before it walked away... I just never got to it. Any pictures of your setup?
Thanks for mentioning the tablecloth fabric. I was look'n all over for crinkle taffeta etc but didn't find anything until I added "tablecloth" the the search terms.
Good luck,

So....basically a spreader bar is simulating a longer hammock?
FYI: If you want to know what type a certain bear is, sneak up behind it and kick it. Then,
run like crazy and climb up a tree. If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black
bear. If the bear just pushes the tree over and eats you, it's a grizzly bear : )
Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me, either, just leave me alone.

Yes! Think of it this way. With the spreader, the hammock doesn't come to a point at the ends. So imagine that there is a point out past the end on the hammock as if the material kept going. The distance between the imaginary points at each end, is the "effective" length of the hammock.

I love the direction this is going. Shorter hammocks = shorter tarps = lighter kit = happier shoulders
