Been watching this thread as I usually make channel end hammocks and am about to make some more. Spyed an interesting item at WalMart tonight...

The green biner is about 6 inches long with a huge bottom gap. Now I know these aren't climbing rated, but the largest one did have a gate on the latch. I was considering that the large biner may work if a simmiliar sized continuous loop of Amsteel bore the most of the load while the biner mainly worked to keep the channel end spread as wide as possible. The Amsteel would also be a fail safe if the biner failed.
I could be completely way off here... I'm by no means an expert on the loads our hammocks need to work with. Just figured I would throw this idea out there for debate. The size of the biner seems to be perfect at least.

Ok sorry this took long.
First pic shows the D_ring to scale at about 3.5 overall length
Second pic shows the connection point: Basically, short Dogbone into a modified prusick type hitch (really I just wrapped it around until I got an even load).
Petzel P-18 alloy D-ring: Approx 2oz each (with DB), $18 each (pricey I know) but one significantly reduced my calf ridge and shoulder squeeze. I'm hoping another will end it all together. But if not I'll use one on my summer rig as well. I really like the fact that this method doesn't add any more length to my hammock and the weight is comparable to the Biners I tried. Thoughts?
Directionally challenged...comicly so.
Not all who wonder are lost...But I'm probably just lost.
That is pretty dang cool Homemadehiker! I like it.
Good luck,

Noticed some 1/2 90 deg PVC conduit ell's ($0.58 each) at the hardware store. About 6 oz each, could cut some weight by trimming about an inch off each end as there is about 1 inch extra on each end when the hammock is under load. Ran the amsteel thru them so if they do fail no harm done. I like the results so far but cant say its much better than the wooden dowel one I was using.
Rog does the hammock channel stay spread across the PVC when you hang? It looks like it would just bunch up in the center.
The total length of the piece is 10 inches, while in the hammock there is about 1 to 1.5 inches on each side of the channel that is not covered with the hammock channel. It doesn't seem to bunch very much but some.
Here are 2 pics with me in the hammock
Thanks for the pix. I looked at those things all summer, every time I went to Menards and just couldn't part with the 58¢. I mean thats $1.16 for two, who can afford that!?
Really, thanks for posting up those photos that looks pretty good.
Good luck,

Just did a mini spreader bar mod on my Clark NX250, foot end only. I did what gmcttr showed on post #43. I tried it out and I think I will like it, tonight I will give it a real test. I saw essentially this same mod done by inspectorguy up at Raven Cliffs and am trying it on his recommendation.
I tried using the electrical conduit after seeing this post... I bought a couple of the 1/2" schedule 40 90 deg ells (one end had the female "bell shape" on it for fitting the pieces together). I strung some 7/64" Amsteel through it.
I weigh 190 lbs, and after laying in the hammock for just a few minutes, with not a great deal of bouncing/squirming, I checked the conduit and the bell shaped end had deformed slightly where the Amsteel contacted it.
Not sure if others have had similar experiences, but I would suggest at least using the schedule 80 conduit (quite a bit heavier) and/or buy the conduit without the bell shape... for some reason the Home Depot did not carry the 1/2" 90 ell in schedule 40 without the belled end when I went in.
