In looking for a portable stand, I came across this one:

Would it be possible to just use one on each side for a tree-free set up?

Should be able to. Check out the turtlelady and the turtledog stands. Handy hammock also makes some portable stands. Can't do any links for you right now.

I'm looking at it as an ideal solution to only having ONE decent tree at a car camping site to hang from.
The only thing is how could you hang the tarp...any suggestions on mods??
EDIT: I just checked out the customer pics that someone posted to the Byers site - they replaced the wood with metal poles. Hmmm!!
Can anyone tell me what metal poles I should be using to emulate this type of stand?
Practically any metal pole will do. Check out the stand Alamosa has made, along with his boom stakes.

Thanks SweetLou - I'd seen that thread quite a while back and had forgotten all about it!
I did a couple of nights of car camping last week where we had only one campsite that had two usable trees and they were a couple of feet too close together. After that, this thread was 'ohhhh, ohhh, solution!!..
Now all I have to do is find a shop that can drill holes for me cause I don't have the equipment. Oh and order more amsteel
