All this talk about hammock stands and one tree stands got me to thinking. I have one tree in my backyard and it is about 10 feet from my deck posts. This is what I have been hanging from, but it occurred to me to try something else, as the tarp is not happy and i can't use a longer hammock.

Our fence is about 12.5 ft from the tree and I was thinking of tying/lashing a lightweight aluminum step ladder to our fence and using that as the other end support. The ladder and fence are 6 ft tall. The steps on the ladder will be facing the hammock. I figure it will act like a tripod of sorts and I can tie the hammock onto the very top of the step-ladder. I can't do something more permanent as we are thinking of moving in a few months.

Do you think it will work? Do you think it is a crazy idea and that I should sit down for the winter and wait until spring?

Thanks for any and all ideas and advice.
