Mitchell but he doesn't want to hike up and then see cars and lots of folks.

    Thanks.
How many days were you considering?

+1 on Mt. Rogers ... great place and like Slowhike says ... always a bit cooler. Wild ponies up there too. Just a thought.

There are plenty of places in the Jefferson, Pisgah, Cherokee and other National Forests. It just depends on how long you plan to hike and how far from civilization you want to be.

Three nights most likely, maybe four. They don't have to be continuous - we can come out to the car and drive to another site if need be.

Would like to be far enough away to not hear man-made sounds (except perhaps planes every now and then). Would rather not see a lot of other folks but occasionally during the day is okay. Good views would be nice. If it's hot, a swimming hole would be nice but I realize they don't exist as you go up.

As we will be coming from the Leesburg, VA area and returning to central New Jersey, any area within an 7 to 8 hour drive from Leesburg is open to consideration. Thought I'd throw this out there in case there is somewhere in West VA that looks good. I looked at the Red River Gorge in KY but didn't think it would be much different temperature wise.

Thanks for all your help guys... and gals.

Bad news guys, check this out:

I was running at my friends pool and gonna jump in and do a flip or dive or whatever when i hit a nail. The nail was sticking up with the nail head out about 3/8ths of an inch. I stomped my foot down to jump off, punctured it, then dragged the nail down my foot about an inch. Pretty deep, hurt to get sewn up. Doc says will be healed on the exterior in 12 days, interior could take longer. hope all my planning wasn't for nothing.

Oh heck, you'll get gouges deeper than that in the Gorge.
Hopefully it will recover soon enough, but don't rush it. A hot sweaty shoe occasionally doused with river water isn't the best environment for a wound like that.

Yeah that's great advise ... keep that puppy aired out as much as you can. Lots of nasties that can find a new home in a damp hot boot environment!

Can you move your week off? If so, Medicineman and I are shooting for a trip to Citico/Slickrock/Kilmer next month.
