I tried it that way first (see third picture). I only tried the other way because I saw a lot of other members with the weight on the lashings. When I have the poles arranged as per the image, my center pole is suspended on the lashings above the other two (and that lashing always slips). To actually get it to contact the other two poles I'd really have to loosen the lashings.
I can probably get my hands on gaff tape, I'll give that a try with the increased number of wraps. Would you recommend using a thinner diameter cord (like paracord)?
