I always considered a 40 degree quilt to be a summer quilt, not 3 season...am I wrong? My UQ and TQ are both 20 degree quilts and I consider them 3 season...

This is true for most people however some sleep warmer than others so a
40* quilt will take them lower than someone like me who sleeps colder and needs the extra insulation.

MikedKC, great to have such a wonderful testing ground so close to the house. Sounds like plenty of good suggestions to try.

I actually sold my 4 season under quilt and now use combinations I
Of my summer and 3 season quilts. I use all four for weather under 20 degrees and just the three season ones down to there and just the summer ones in summer. It is lighter that way for me and works well.
Predictions are risky, especially when it comes to the future.

Here in Southeast Texas, I imagine it would dang near be 4 season.

Very nice trip report. My 20* Incubator is on the way, and I'm looking forward to trying it out on a New Years Eve hang here in Illinois. I went full length, so I wouldn't have to worry about the feet so much.
