    Hola!

    Hey Ewoks!

I got hooked recently as I researched vid's on Youtube and saw some of Jason Klass' work, then stumbled upon (woe is me!) this Shugemery character, and hence to the forum.

I live at the southern end of the Manzano mountains in New Mexico, and my 58-year-old declaration this year is walking the crest trail stem to stern (a bit over 30 miles) over the course of a few days. This led me immediately to wondering how to lighten the load.

That's why I'm here. Just on verge of figuring out a good starter hammock, especially one that lets me sleep flat. So would appreciate economic yet quality suggestions regarding that.

Also need a stove, quilt (guilt?), pack. Hell, need it all!

    Nice to meet ya'll!

Welcome from Soonerland! You'll get many varied opinions on lightweight gear, but it's all great advice, just personal preference. I plan to hike the Gila Wilderness in the fall, and any suggestions would be appreciated. Welcome again!

    good 'nuf

appreciative of the kind words and re-directs. the tothewoods.net page seems helpful, and, of course, continue to watch the shugemery series on youtube. just about to pull the trigger on my first purchases. thinking: a bushbuddy wood stove (cause we have lots of dry wood in these parts); and a black warbonnet somesuch hammock to start, then make some ourselves.

nice place. gut 2 b hier!

    First Purchase!

    Hey Ya'll,

Pulled the trigger, itchy fingered an' all, and bought that HH on sale at REI for 99 bucks, the Hennessy Hammock Expedition A-Sym, hunter green to be exact, as someone had mentioned on the forum.

Figure we'll buy one, then make one. Me handy wife will show me the ropes, that is.....

And do appreciate your kind replies.

Howdy neighbor! Congrats on the HH. I'm also sporting a hennessy down in the land of manana. Good times. As for larger hikes in the area that are on the todo list, have you read about the Grand Enchantment Trail? A set of trails and minor cross country routes from Phoenix to Albuquerque. I can't say I ever really aspire to hike that all, but I would like to eventually hit all of the sections that are in New Mexico.

I made one attempt last year at the section between Monticello and Magdalena, but we had to bail out as a friend along for the ride got altitude sickness. C'est la vie. Still a good 7 day trip.... On day 4 we made our day 1 goal . I'll tell you one thing from that trip though: It was my hammock's maiden voyage and when they say around here that you need bottom insulation.... they ain't kiddin'. At the very least, you need a good pad, but I've never been happy with that. A bottom quilt is the way to go.

Moreover, Arrowhead Equipment is having a 20% off sale for this holiday weekend. You can snag a 3 season synthetic under quilt for about $100 I think. If you're a cold sleeper, for an extra $25 you can get the insultex upgrade just to make sure you stay warm, though during the summer down here... I doubt you'd need it.

At any rate, I'm mainly saying that even in May/June in New Mexico, the mountains can still get to the low 40's high 30's and ... making a pad out of a pack cover and pine needles may sound awesome (and it works OK), but really, get a quilt .
