Thread: Cuben Tarp Wars

  1. #41
your killing me raul, you have had two cubens and I cant get my first one from joe yet.

He emailed me and told me it was going to be late now.

I guess I screwed up by not demanding a date and so all those who did somehow went in front of me.

I second this, this was on of the appeals to me about cuben. I have a black BWWD and cant see any light thorugh it so now I'm going for the complete opposite. Its one of the appeals to me about hammock camping, being able to see the stars at night, it will kinda be like sleeping without a tarp every night and I like the sound of that.

Now on another note, Ill be interested in seeing sewn seams VS taped seams over long term use and which one holds better or if they are equal in strength???
Sometimes I like to hike and think, And sometimes I just like to hike.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.

Might be overkill, but you could sew the seams and then tape over it for extra strength (overkill, as I said, and not necessary). The tape bonding agent would serve to seam seal the material.

The tape I have heard is perhaps stronger than sewn seam, due to the fact that you're putting holes in the material when you sew, and the bonding is extremely strong. But then I'm no expert.

Not to thread drift, but, didn't WV test this?? If I remember correctly he started a thread on the bonding agents and which held best, worst, not at all kind of thing!?

There might be another cuben tarp pic posted soon?????

Hey, hopefully this is the right place for this question. I just got a MLD cuben hex tarp in the mail today and I've been playing around with it for a while in the front yard. It's awesome. Seems very well constructed, can get a nice tight pitch with it, and has good coverage.

How do you guys pack your cuben tarps? The only way I can get it to go back into its stuff sack is to fold it up like a blanket, being mindful to smooth out the air pockets. Stuffing it back into the stuffsack seems like its impossible halfway in. I also tried storing it in some #4 HH snakeskins but it seemed like even that demanded more volume than the skins had in them. The last thing I want to do to this new tarp is tear it up because I'm acting like a stupid noob. Is it ok to cram a cuben tarp back into its storage bag the same way you can with sil or spinn?

I just furl my tarp with little bungee Nacrabiners, four of them attached to my ridgeline. Then I fold it up, but I don't bother with a stuff sack or snakeskins any more, just put it in a front pocket of my Aarn pack or a mesh outer pocket of my other pack.
