i would rather deal with the froze boots then put them in my hammock and wreck my comfortable hang.before i hit the hang i have tinder and a pile of kindleing set aside in a dry spot so i can start a warming fire if i get cold or in the morning to cook or thaw boots.i wear stuff sacks on my feet untill my boots are pliable.last week i put a hot water bottle in one boot and it stayed thawed.only had one bottle.the next night i dried my boots off in front of fire before i went to bed.worked good.burnt a hole in my sock though.

try not wearing boots.... maybe sandals?
with some sort of over shoe the over shoe wont freeze and can be wiped dry if it get wet
The sandals may get damp or even if they get soaked they dont hold near as much water and dry out by a fire very fast.
also keeps your feet real flexible to allow proper blood flow to them.

if you have a fire and most of the long distance hikers wont take the time/energy to make one but say you do,,,hot rocks in socks then in boots do the trick too and yes everyone knows to not use river stones or kidney stones for that matter

I have given up and pull my laces open as much as possible b4 I go to hammock. That way I can get my foot in and let that warm it up in the morning.

... What do people do with their boots to keep them warm while winter camping?

They always go in my sleeping bag with me. I buy "long" sleeping bags, so have some space down at my feet. Just slip the wet boots or shoes into an oven roaster bag (a multi-purpose item) and tie it or use a twist-tie. You can use a large zip-lock or trash-compactor bag. In the morning, you have warm boots/shoes. I've never had mine freeze on me yet.

I admit in the winter I'm usually on the ground.

I use pack boots in the winter, so the liner goes in the hammock with me and the outer goes on the step out pad underneath.
If I need to take a midnight stroll, I just slip into the outer shells.

I have the Villager model for commuting to work (I walk about a mile from the train to the office). They fit over my street shoes but not big enough for my boots. The tall nylon body acts as a gaitor and the boot adds a few degrees of warmth as it's adding another air layer of insulation. But I don;t like the tread, at least for city sidewalks. It's too smooth. I would have preferred a more aggresive sole.

They do have other models though that are beefier.

What do you folks use as step pads. I've used a Tyvek type of shipping envelope from the USPS. I also put my boots in it when camping on the ground to help keep them dry.

As an idea, you could make a bag that hangs on the inside of the hammock at the foot end that hold your boots. That way they'll have a little more protection from the frost.
