I have a dirty little secret: I'm not a backpacker. Weight is a non-issue.
I can't speak for others, but in my case, I have fairly long shock cords attached to the doors of my Super Fly (with bowlines!). The other ends have s-biners that clip to the pull loop on the opposite side stake to hold the door closed. When not in use, it clips to the pull out loop on the side of the fly. That's where the split rings are.
