    ZPacks sleeping bag/quilt

I'm looking at top quilts and found this sleeping bag/quilt from ZPacks.

For the temperature rating, they are pretty light (compared to other top quilts I've been looking at), and having the option to use it as a sleeping bag would be nice, especially since it costs a lot (but I'm not complaining about the price)

What do you think about having a zipper under you when using it as a sleeping bag? And is there anything obvious that would make it a bad solution for a hammock? I guess it's wider than a top quilt, and there's of course the zipper. But I'm using a sleeping bag now as top quilt and the zipper hasn't bothered me (just zipped at the foot end).

    20 Degrees (-7* C)
Medium Length, Regular Width - 16.8 ounces (476 grams)
    $325
I costs more than other top quilts with similar temp rating (e.g. Warbonnet Mamba), but otoh it's dual purpose and lighter.

They have a sweet-looking tarp with doors as well. This is going to get expensive!

Wow those are really light, I wonder what they're doing differently to get the extra weight savings, especially when you factor in the zipper. Maybe lighter nylon than typical? Looks like I'd save half a pound with one of those.

    HIs recipe is

Inner Shell Material: Black .64 oz/sqyd SevenD Ripstop Nylon
Baffle Material: .34 oz/sqyd Cuben Fiber

My reservation w/ a bottom zipper (footbox or full length) is abrasion to the hammock fabric or inflatable pad, when on the ground.

Haven't heard the first complaint about that or a zipper being uncomfortable (ie: enlightenedequipment zippered footboxes), though.

I'll save 700 grams / 25 oz. and considerable volume. While at the same time getting a much warmer bag. Everyone's happy except my bank account.

My worry with the zipper is the 7D fabric. I've never seen anyone who can completely solve the snag issues that inherantly come with zippers and I question whether the 7D is strong enough to not get ripped if a zipper snag was to happen.

I love just about everything that Joe builds. I bet the zipper is one of those small flat jobs that you wouldn't even feel. How often would you zip up anyway? When I use a sleeping bag in hammock, it's kind of upside down with the zipper on the sides of me. I don't see why this would be any differnet.

Makes you wonder if there's some other way of closing the backside. Aren't there other quilts with no back zipper and just straps to hold the pad? Having the zipper on top is probably not a good idea since it doesn't have draft tube along the zipper.

Sidewinder: I don't plan on using the zipper when using it in a hammock. However, trips which involve ground sleeping are not totally out of the question (above the treeline, or places like Iceland where there simply are no trees! ) In a hammock, I would use it as you described.

Now that I think about - this is really non-hammock questions. But it's a fairly large chunk of money (I also have to calculate on about 30% extra for shipping, customs and sales tax, unless the package slip through customs unnoticed like my recent UQ purchase) , so I'd like to think it through and get something that'll be useful for the next decade or so, even if it costs a bit more up front. I don't think the market around here is big enough for used speciality items like this, so I rather get it (theoretically) right the first time.

I found another discussion about it, with some disagreement about the temperature rating. But this info from ZPacks looks consistent with the recommended numbers:

It's also consistent with how Enlightened calculates temp ratings on the Revelation (thanks for the hint, Funny Money, I had missed those).

There are several Cottage companies that do just that. Some use a toggle system, some use omni tape or velcro. In fact the use of a zipper for an ultralight equipment company is kind of a shocking choice. The weight a zipper adds without any noticeable benefit over the other lighter options makes it an odd choice. Sidewinder may be right as to the type of zipper used and I'd like to see some better detail to know.

It looks like a fairly lightweight zipper:

Zipper weight for different sleeping bag lenghts:
    Short: .5 ounces (14 grams)
Regular, Long: .6 ounces (17 grams)

Comparing the weight: I think the Warbonnet Mamba comes closest. It has the same amount of down (10.5 oz.) and the same temp rating (20F) with 2" loft. The Mamba weighs 19 oz. On the other hand, a hammock-specific top quilt is probably narrower, right?
