is this what you guys are talking about?? it is 80x60 and weighs 2 lbs..seems heavy to me. Why would you even use it when a 15° down bag weighs less?

Price difference. 28.00 vs. 280.00. I was wanting to cut down the liner to a more manageable weight/size. I'm sure I don't need all of that extra material.
Here is one I came across today for under $20 used, in good condition.

It can be a dual purpose item with this conversion. I don't think mine weighs 2 lbs but I need to break out the scale to find out. I don't use mine for hiking but it works great as a liner in colder temps.

.... And here's another one under $20 ...

Just weighed mine. It is 22 oz. I can't remember where I got it but it has the army tag on it
the 22oz one may be the 'new' thinsulate version. mine is older, and has the same polyester quilting material inside that a field jacket liner or pants has. but mine only weighs 16oz.
they're so popular with soldiers because they're cheap, light enough, durable, warm, can be wrung out when wet, and can be cleaned by just letting them get wet. you don't mind getting it muddy. try that with my $300 WM bag? no way!
they're also good to cut up into a sewn-in rain jacket liner. just about any tailor located outside any army base knows how to do it.
They make them from PrimaLoft now, too - but they're pretty expensive. Certainly wouldn't be too hard to DIY a PL one for much cheaper, though.
