    Adding pad for warmth...

This has probably been covered but I'll ask anyway. I want to do some winter hanging but just have other things I want to spend money on other that buying another set of quilts for the few times I might get out. I have a WBBB 1.7 DL, 3 season Yeti, and a 20* Burrow from HG. I'm wondering how low in temperature I could go if I added a sleep pad to the mix. I don't like the idea because I like the way the hammock lays with the UQ, but it will have to get me by for this winter. I was thinking of just adding a sleeping bag liner that I have already for added top layer insulation. Post up some experiences you guys have had, those that have done this, if you wouldn't mind. Any recommendations would be cool too...thanks fellas

Adding a pad really warms up the hammock. I know it is not as comfortable as an UQ alone, but it does significantly add to the warmth. This is what I am doing until I can fun a winter full length UQ. It really didn't take very much away from the comfort at all. YMMV

I am using a Thermarest Z-Rest. I used that, my 20F Phoenix UQ, and a -25F bag as a TQ down into the low 20's and was hot. I had to pull the bag/TQ off of my chest for most of the night.

I wonder if my Big Agnes insulated Air Core with a little air in it would help...

I was just hanging in the Catskills @ 13F over a 20F-rated HG UQ, and with no sign of chill. I wonder whether a pad is of greater value in picking up additional margin compared to a second wool sweater, carefully shaking up / out your UQ for down distribution, and being absolutely sure of no air leaks.

My experience, so far with the UQ, when it is fully sealed/seated against the hmmk, is that the down quilt on top is sufficient if rated at 10-15F or more above the the outside temp.

The UQ rules; the TQ or SB matters less.

But, I am comfortable sleeping in a wool sweater. And in Shug's second pair of wool socks. Well, not Shug's socks.

i use a big agnes dual core.
i inflate it close to full, then when i turn in, i release air until it conforms to the hammock, but still leaves a bit of air cushion.
i have no problem with it being 'less comfortable' than a bare hammock and UQ.

i sleep during the hotter months pad free and it's 6 of 1, half dozen of the other as far as the comfort level w/ or w/o one.

also during stormy winter conditions, i can drop my hammock low to the ground and out of as much wind etc... as possible, letting the center section touch the snow while still having the cushioned affect. allowing me to set the tarp edges right on the ground, helping to block wind, rain etc...

I can't speak for the Yeti but I add a 18" square of reflectix to my winter setups, it slides under my butt and keeps away the chills.
