Look at a gearskin pack. Start at SGT Rock's hiking headquarters.

It's a strip of material roughly 12 x 60 with straps. It folds around your gear and buckles up.

There are pictures of my attempt in the gallery. search user name "teblum"

Mine worked fine for a week long hike in May

Right on. My first project was a Speer style hammock, then I jumped to make a G4 pack, which was way to much. So I made more hammocks, then moved up to making a gearskin. Gearskins are easy cause it's just a compression system with backpack straps.

Sewing has more to do with clear thinking than anything else.

lvleph's list is a good list of projects starting form easiest to hardest.

Keep in mind whenever you make something, after testing find what works and what doesn't. This motivates you to make a next generation item, and a next and a next. It never stops. Once you start down the dark path. . .

I first started out with making stuff sacks. Lots and lots of stuff sacks. Then I made a few hammocks, skins, and then a cat cut tarp.

Thanks for all the replies. I have my sights set on a few stuff sacks now. Probably convert one over to a Blackbishop sack as well.

I was wondering on suggestions for getting fabric outside of getting lucky at Walmart since I don't think I would know what I am looking at. I think I have seen a thread or two in the past that described different vendors but I can't seem to find it now.

One place to start looking is to order from Speer. Scroll down to the 'Make Your Own Hammock Supplies' section.

    Another vendor would be Thru-Hiker.

    Also Quest Outfitters

There's a great list of supplies vendors on Just Jeff's site: http://www.tothewoods.net/JeffsHikingPage.html. (Look under Gear-Making Links)

I asked once if he would move it over here, but that hasn't happened.

FWIW, my progression so far has been:

Sewing lessons from Blackbishop while <ahem> "helping" make my BlackCat tarp, then lessons again and help from BB sewing a ray-way quilt and stuff sack after I bought my own machine, then lots of hemming/sewing practice myself making 2 hammocks and 2 bug-bivvies so far.

Just jump right in and kick your feet.

I am working now on a Just Jeff Hammock sock/Risk Travel Pod type thingy.

    Again, fwiw.
