I will be in N.C. for about 6 weeks and would like to go break in my new WBBB 1.1 dble.
anywhere in the western half of state would work.
    Thanks

Lots of choices. A couple I've been to that are easy to find are Linville Gorge & the Shining Rock Area.
I'm sure some others will chime in.
And when you have more specific questions about areas that sound good to you, I'm sure there will be people here that can help.

Where in NC? ANYWHERE. The entire western part of the state is literally littered with places. I don't even know where to begin. For what kind of place are you looking? Hike-thru? Car camping?

Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can.

And whither then? I cannot say."

Nowhere to hang in NC. No trees. Just a bleak flat treeless plain. (Kidding of course, just about anywhere is a good spot!). The NC State Parks are another good resource for you to look into.

Not thru hiking, as i will need to get back to the car and only have weekend.

would like to park the car and hike in to a site less than 5 miles, could go on to another site or not and just hike off from a base camp.

    thanks

I understand were you're coming from, being out of state & planning a visit into unfamiliar territory.
I was going to suggest linvllegorge.net but HawkEye beat me to it.
I think you'll find as more maps & answers to questions there as you will for any specific place I know of in NC.
Great resource & a beautiful place to spend some time. You can do anything there from day trip to car camp/base camp & day hike to backpacking.

Pisgah National Forest between Waynesville and Brevard is also a great place. Lots of trails and places to camp. Depending on when you will be down here, you will need to account for weather. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a good access point for National Forest land across much of WNC. It gets closed during winter weather. Just something to be aware of.
