One of the virtues of ice-fishing, like gathering and processing firewood, is that it keeps you fairly active, and hence warm, not to mention providing easy access to liquid water. That's kind of what I was hoping to do out of our base-camp, as opposed to just spending the day milling about, cooling off, particularly around -30C. The only problem with the plan is that Algonquin doesn't permit ice-fishing..
I've seen some interesting lakes just north and south of Hwy 60 or off of Hwy 12, but I need to hear back on a couple of emails I sent out. For example there's a chain of lakes north of Oxtounge lake that look nice, and the Haliburton Forest Reserve has an extensive network of snowmobile trails.
