If the strap doesn't have a loop at both ends a knot is necessary to attach the amsteel loop. So far every knot I've tested in the strap is almost impossible to untie after the weight is loaded. The only easy knot to untie on straps is the Marlinspike, but then you end up with a toggle at both ends, which is OK I guess. If your straps have loops at both ends adjustability is limited.

Bonepile, you can stick a marlinspike any knot. When you're ready to break it down, just remove the spike.

Exactly. That's what I was meaning about it being easy to untie.

I see, I wasn't thinking about a strap with no loop in it. What about a toggle with a 1" slit in it for the strap. That way you eliminate the need for the amsteel altogether.

Some comments here on difficulty with untieing knots in straps. No need to ask how I know, but the knot can be soaked in hot/warm water for a few minutes and unties fairly easy.

Excellent idea, gringo! Happen to have a piece of that.

This sliding toggle will put me back on the single line suspension of which I dream, having gone from giant whoopie to failed UCR. I'll try it with a fixed loop on one end and the sliding toggle on the other. Thanks, IM!

Larkshead to the sliding toggle from loop off hammock

The toggle is a solid dowel, compression of a larkshead knot won't collapse the toggle. No sharp bends in the cord to cause a failure.

    Small radius solution?

Couldn't you move this back to a more simple setup (no tee, straight toggle) simply by reversing the ends? Larkshead the amsteel to the hammock, put the toggle on the top end going through the tree strap. Then you won't have small radius to small radius but have the wider area of a 1" tree strap against the small radius. I just like the idea of the smaller straight toggle over a tee.

Want to be able to disconnect from the hammock?... Use one of the dutch whoopie hooks on the hammock end instead of a larkshead.

I now have a reason to order up a knurling tool for my metal lathe, I'm thinking a fine knurling on an aluminum/ti round bar would eliminate any chance of slippage. Would be super easy to manufacture as well. And the amsteel is abrasion resistant (used in winch lines for a long time), and the tree strap is as well since the tree bark will be much rougher than a fine knurling.

Oooo what a great idea. Being whoopie sling challenged (I don't have them) this idea is just the thing for me. Do you need to make sure that the tarp is over the toggle? My next though is the tree strap length as it is limited in adjustment, even if you vary the number of wraps around the tree..
