I buy Sawyers spray in the camping section at Walmart and spray it on my gear, including whoopies and tree straps. I let it dry. Some people mix it up in a bucket and dunk their stuff. This stuff causes neurological problems in cats when wet, so I always make sure mine are in the house before I spray and don't let them out until it is dry. Because I spray everything, I should probably get a concentrate and dilute it--would probably be cheaper. I know there is at least one thread on permethrin and I'll see if I can find it.

This is one of the links. I actually searched using the term "deet" because permethrin is often misspelled and when anyone askes about deet, which is not good for hammocks, etc., permethrin will come up in the replies.

I spray my tarp, hammock & tree straps as well. (Along with all my clothes, hat and shoes.) In fact I just got two more bottles in the mail from REI yesterday to recoat everything before my big hike next month. I don't do bugs.

I hang my stuff from a clothes line and spray both sides then let it sit for a day to dry.

Thumbs down Question of spraying tree straps?

I don't mean to be fussy, but you do realize that by spraying your tree straps, you are killing every little critter that goes up and down the tree trunks, even if they would never detour to get on your hammock.

I spray or soak my hammock for the mosquitoes, but my tree straps? No. But, ... of course hike your own hike.

Rain Man is right and not to belabor the issue, please be aware of the toxicity of this stuff and in particular don't use it around bodies of water or streams. It's extremely toxic to fish.

I know people spray their yards and stuff like that, but personally I like bugs except for when they're trying to eat me. You never know what you're killing...
