well i now might be a maybe. it all depends on the temps that weekend. i tested my setup last night. it got down to about 30*-32*. i got cold. i had to go in at about 5am. any lower than 40 and i don't think i will be able to make. so we will see. i'm going to try and tweak my setup this next weekend see if i can sleep a little warmer.

SPE can solve almost any below temp problem

and you can make one using walmart elcheapo fabric and even glue it versus sewing. Once sewn you put into it various thicknesses of ccf=like the blue pad sold at walmart.
Foam is cheap and lightweight, just doesn't pack down so small.
    SPE=speer pad extender
Much info on it here at HF.
On top to increase the range of my quilt I wear my camp clothes and layering up with them can get you lower too.
Then there's the hammock sock. We've been playing with fancy socks lately but reality is that a simple bedroom sheet (maybe 1.5 of them) can make a sock that will hold a lot of heat in, block the wind, and breath.
Just some thoughts from another hammock noobie (though I've been at it for 12 years now

I won't tell you not to hike at night, but the rangers frown on it and signs clearly state against it, so be stealth if you do.

I'm not much of a speedster any more, but a hiker in sort of decent shape can put their head down and make the first day's hike in 4 hours.
Thanks, folks! Exactly what I was guessing and hoping to hear, but concerned if we can't hit the trail by 2:00 it will be dark getting into Hobbs. May have to rethink the plan to accommodate my clients!

thanks MM. i need to get out to wally world and see what they have in the fabric dept. i probably should have put and extra pair of socks on and my down jacket. it was my shoulders and and from about my knees down that were freezing. and i should have heated up some water in my nalgene. does the ripstop nylon you get at walmart breathe at all or should i just use an old bed sheet or 2?

I hope not. Isn't that the perfect temperature to grow sugar sand?

Traffic and I (and the rest of the class of BSF 2012) look forward to sharing a bit of the trail with you in March.

well I am pretty sure Hamhocker won't be going since she may finally have a full time job by then...crossing fingers.

If I can get off Friday I will see folks along the trail or at Hobbs Cabin.

just an FYI i have seen campsites closed because they were full so hopefully that won't happen here

I kept eying emcee's down booties at BSF and noticed some on clearance at REI last night for $26.95 so I had to pick up a pair. 10 oz for the large pair. Lighter than my crocs! Here's hoping for 'cool' not 'frigid' weather in March.

Good deal, Ftroop. Those booties were nice to get into after sloshing through the creek.
Actually, I'm not too concerned about temps. I can handle mid 20's. I'm more concerned about rain. Need more protection for my hands and feet.
