Pip's, that's what I did as a temporary solution. But laying in the hammock last night I got to thinking about my weekly laundry and how the whoopies need to be removable. Have something else in mind for attachments. Will post when I have some time and run some trials.
oldgringo, I marked the location and used a dremel with a sanding drum. The dowel is 3/4" with about 1/8" removed for the groove reducing the diameter of the dowel to 1/2". Not sure if 1/2" would be adequate with the groove cut.

Oldgringo, my thoughts now are for a 4" center of amsteel feed thru the channel with loops on each end to fit around the dowel ends. This would allow removable of the dowel/suspension for cleaning the hammock or as you suggest switching to another hammock. The loop on the end of the whoopie could still be clove hitched to the ends of the dowel as a separate unit. Hopefully I'll be able to work on this tomorrow.

For what it's worth, my dowels are like 3/8ths inch diameter (they look like pencils). Mr. Pips and I have been using our living room lounger with Red's mini-spreader bars now for over a month and have not had any issues with the strength of the dowels. In fact--no issues at all!
P.S.: YAY!!! We don't have a lathe, but we do have dremel tools and drills and files for a redneck lathe! Thanks, guys. I'm going to make some new dowels with grooves a la Olddog. But I'm not looking forward to getting those clove hitches loose. I tried once already, and they were so seated, I gave up!

Surely, God could have made a better way to sleep.
Surely, God never did.
That appears to be square metal tubing that OD's stand is made from. How did you make your grooves? With a lathe?
btw Pips, that was one mighty fine tablecloth hammock you made.

Has anyone considered using these mini-spreaders on a hammock that you have "skins" on. All my hammocks are skinned out all the time for ease of storage and carry in the backpack . I'm thinking the mini bars are going to be somewhat problematic with the skins - unless they can be "de-coupled" rather easily. I'm planning on trying a couple different versions the next 2 days to see what happens. Any advice before I go in "whole hog" ?
