I bought a set from wal-mart to try as a (possible) cheap replacement for the round aluminum Easton stakes.
I found they bend quite a bit easier than the Easton stakes. I bent them in the ground & also experimenting w/ this type of attachment for the hammock support.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

Do you think Sgt Rock will be able to tell the difference?

Seriously, I use carbon instead of aluminum in MMPs because there are two segments each 23" long. The difference adds up over that much length.

That's a good difference. I haven't tried toggles yet...do they really need to be 23" long, or is that just for your convenience? Seems like 4-5" would be plenty.

That's not for toggles, that's for stiffeners in MMPs (Molly Mac Packs). Making MMPs is the reason I end up with short pieces of carbon fiber, which I use in 2.5" lengths for toggles.

    Good online poker face, Jeff!

I've found 2" to be a good size, I'm trying 1.75" right now, they may be on the short side of useful. My arrows are smaller in diameter than the normal aluminum shafts, so they may be slightly lighter than .4 grams per inch.

I measured a segment from an Easton 1820 Genesis arrow... some of the narrowest you can get!

Then you may have the same diameter. I picked this "Scout" arrow because it was just a field arrow and the narrowest aluminum one they had at Dicks.

    I don't use toggles & Marlinspike hitches,

but I am getting a kick out of this thread!

I have a mental image of all the toggle users meticulously trying ever thinner, ever shorter sections of ever lighter materials until failure occurs. Sort of like "I can name that tune in x notes!" with painful repercussions.

Don't get me wrong - I envy the lighter weight hangers here and wish I could safely engage in gram-shaving. It is just a chuckle to see how low one can go. Nanotubes?

Gotta get there somehow. I take no offense at all. In fact I make fun of myself doing this sort of thing. I should have started recording butt landings a long time ago.

And a failed experiment is not near as embarrassing as just plain old missing the hammock when you sit down! Been there ... dun that!
