Question 8x10 tarps used on diagonal with asym hammocks?

Please point me to the thread if this has been discussed at length. I currently have an HH Explorer UL with the stock tarp, acquiring a tarpless BB shortly. I got an ID 8x10 siltarp 2 with my REI dividend to use in group situations, etc.

I could certainly use the siltarp in A-frame mode, but end coverage would be minimal.

I'm wondering if anyone regularly uses an 8x10 rectangular tarp set up on the diagonal with an HH or BB asym hammock? The rectangular shape should match up pretty well with with the asym hammock shape, and would provide just under a 13' ridgeline length.

    Thanks in advance,

I thought the stock tarp to the Explorer was rectangular and just rigged to hung on the diagonals but such is not the case. As I was doing my HH Hex winter mod I found the stack tarp is actually rhomboid. I have considered hanging an 8x10 diagonally but don't think I have one to play with.

The stock HH tarp is not as simple as it first appears.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

The ULBP you use is almost a foot shorter than the Explorer UL I use. I'm concerned about the ends if used in A-frame mode.

In A-frame setup it might be a little short on the ends with 8X10. Diagonally it's no problem, of course.

    A-frame OK with SS

I set this (A-frame) up yesterday afternoon in the backyard. With snakeskins and SS undercover, the coverage looks like it might be OK. The hammock is a 1/2 foot or so inside the tarp.

I wouldn't use this config w/o the WP undercover and skins.

I'll try the 8x10 on the diagonal next week.

I alternate between this very set up and the HH Hex with My HH. It works great and provides plenty of coverage.

Also, I like the flexibility of the ID 8x10 for potential use in a number of set ups if I have to go to the ground.

Full-sized tarp setup makes me appreciate the stock fly

I've been using my stock HH fly for over a year now with 60+ nights in the backcountry. I have tried tieing the tarp directly to the tree to get a tauter pitch, but generally leave it on the prussics.

Setting up a full-sized 8x10 tarp yesterday really made me appreciate how simple the HH stock configuration is to work with. Between:
    • Making/attaching 8 tieouts to the tarp (incl ridgeline)
    • Having to tie the tarp to the tree and get the height right
    • driving 6 stakes in the ground
    • Getting the tension even across all 6 tieouts
    • Getting the tarp positioned directly over the hammock

Versus simply unrolling the stock tarp from my snakeskins and tieing down two lines/stakes...what a difference. It'll be interesting to see over time how often I really end up using the bigger tarp.

    Only 2 stakes used

When I set up its easy for me I only use 2 stakes the same 2 that i tie the shock cord from the HH to When using on a Diagonal you only have 2 stake points to ground and 2 tie outs to the tree. When on a diagonal you can eveb off set just like the off set on the HH. Does that make sence? Not sure if I'm explaining right.

I have been playing with an Equinox silnylon 8x10 tarp and a HH. It's a bit short on the ends in an A frame setup. For a diagonal setup, I don't think the tarp can survive a 13 ft span without a ridgeline underneath or the lone center tie out tied to a ridgeline above.
