I've put at least 200 or 300 hours sleeptime on my 1.9oz hammock. I'm about 15lbs lighter, but wasn't when I started hanging in it. I think I was in the 230ish range at the time, so I know how you feel. It's all good!

Any way to tell if the fabric is .9 or 1.1, etc in the store?

John, I used 1/8" PolyPro drawcord from owfinc (DCRD1/8P) with good success. I used pliers to pull the whipping tight. On my first try, I didn't, and the sides that I had pulled out a little bit more immediately slipped, so that all the fabric was even. As long as you can get it tight, I don't see why boot laces wouldn't work. I'd stay away from cotton in case the whipping get's wet. Also, I'm not sure if you can get the whipping tight enough with stretchy cord or boot laces.
it will get a little easier after you used some of both for a while.
someone made a good suggestion... if you can easily see your hand through one layer, chances are it's more like 1.1.
the 1.9 is a little thicker.

yeah, most any light, non-cotton cord w/ decent strength will work.
it's not under a great stress. mason line works fine.

This might be stupid, but what is Mason Line? Where do I find it?
Home Depot! It's with the concret supplies floats and things. Mason's use it to mark out areas for pouring concrete and keeping a level line while pouring it and also for keeping rows of brick straight and level. the kind we are talking about is a braided line, not twisted, It usually says #18 mason line on the package and comes in white, flourescent yellow and pink. the mason line near the concrete supplies in home depot is made by marshallton and comes on a roll of 500 feet for 10 bucks. the same line can be found in the rope isle about knee level on a 250 foot roll for 4 bucks only its made by everbuilt.

I am thinking of using a plastic tywrap (tie wrap?) or cable tie as they are sometimes called. I have heard of that being used and wonder if there are any downsides? The upside is ease of replacement, and the fact that they are both cheap and readily available (at least around me).

I have 3 hammocks whipped with pull ties. Over 2 summers of 9 weeks straight each (son uses one @ scout camp) and no problems yet.
